5,300 years ago, an injured and starving man from Val Venosta, Italy, fled across an Alpine glacier to escape pursuers. But his enemies caught up with him and with a practiced arrow-shot penetrated his shoulder blade and subclavian artery. Before long, he was dead from blood loss. “Oetzi the Iceman” was found mummified in 1991. On his person were pouches containing mushroom remedies, the oldest known proof in existence of medicinal mushrooms usage.

One of the mushrooms he carried was a traditional de-wormer known as Birch polypore (Piptoporus betulinus), which makes sense because whipworm eggs were found in Oetzi’s intestines. The other mushroom was a species frequently used to cauterize wounds, Tinder fungus (Fomes fomentarius). The Iceman’s right hand had been injured days earlier and was in the process of healing when he was killed.

Both of these are polypores, so named because they have pores instead of gills underneath. No species of polypore is known to be poisonous. They usually grow on trees, dead or alive.

With a couple of notable exceptions, most polypores are inedible because they are woody and fibrous. But as natural remedies in the form of tea, extracts and poultices, they have been invaluable to people all across the globe for many millennia.

Oral traditions of Native Americans bear tale of many types of polypores being used to help against the diseases brought by the Europeans, including Birch polypore but also Reishi (Ganoderma resinaceum), Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) and the now almost vanished species Agarikon (Fomitopsis officinalis).

As it so happens, Agarikon is also the oldest mushroom referenced in European medical literature. It was listed by Dioscorides in the Materia Medica of 65 B.C. as a treatment for tuberculosis. In confirmation of this, Polish researcher K. Grzywnowics published an article in 2001 titled Medicinal mushrooms in Polish Folk Medicine where he states that Agarikon tea was historically used in his country as a remedy for lung conditions, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, open bleeding and infected wounds.

So far, we’ve only covered the history of medicinal mushrooms in Europe and America and have barely even touch upon their use in Asia, where their use has been even more exhaustive. At least three Asian species must be included in any article on the history of mushrooms.

First out is Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), sometimes nicknamed the “Mushroom of Immortality” due to its wide range of healing properties. Reishi was mentioned in Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic from around 2,000 years ago. Many ancient Oriental temples and wood-carvings include images of this highly revered “cure-all” fungus.

Next is Cordyceps, a minute fungus from the Tibetan plateau, parasitising on silk caterpillars. Cordyceps sinensis was first mentioned as a medicinal mushroom in The Classic Herbal of the Divine Plowman from 200 A.D. It is popular with athletes to improve physical stamina. Historically, it’s been used as an aphrodiciac.

Finally there is the Shiitake mushroom, which today is a common household name even in the West. In Asia, however, it is known to have been cultivated as a gourmet mushroom for at least a thousand years. What may surprise is that Shiitake is also one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms in the world. Its potential uses range from energizing tonic to immune-booster and antibiotic with anti-tumor properties.

Modern research into medicinal use of mushrooms began in earnest in the late 1960’s Japan. One pioneer, Dr. Ikekawa, discovered that families of mushroom growers had significantly lower cancer rates than their surrounding communities. Scientific research into medicinal mushrooms has expanded exponentially since that time and continues to increase and intensify until this day. Medicinal mushrooms are still in the process of making history.

Be loved by millions. Get a sports car. Be admired. Be interviewed. Write a book. Let the exciting person inside of you out. Or, do nothing, change nothing, and remain as you are.

We’ve just finished reading online reviews of about thirty weight loss plans, everything from NutriSystems and Weight Watchers to Fatloss4idiots to Jarrod’s Subway diet. They discussed health, calories, protein, diet pills, weight gain, carbs, grapefruit, and just about everything else that’s involved in being healthy. Testimonials are there to convince you that you can do it. You already know you can lose the weight, keeping it off is the problem. The testimonials are just there to reinforce your own opinion. Heck, you could even become a spokesperson for the plan of your choice. You could be doing the testimonial! Look at all of them you see on TV. Any one of them COULD BE YOU! They want you to succeed and show others. You are worthy, so do it!

We have done a lot of homework on this subject because it matters. We have written many reviews of many products, including several times about this lady’s particular plan. The question becomes, “Why is it just a backup plan?” Well, there are a couple of reasons, but mostly, she isn’t where she wants to be and she isn’t sticking to her plan to get there. When you don’t do any exercise at all, your metabolism burns calories (3500=1 pound) at 60% carbs and 40% fat, but with a little exercise your metabolism burns at 40% carb and 60% fat. Burning fat is weight loss!

The rest? It’s pretty simple, really. Like I said at the outset: Set up a plan. Follow the plan. Lose the weight. Become beautiful. Wear thin people clothes. Go on television as the person that lost all that weight. Be loved by millions. Get a sports car. Be admired. Be interviewed. Write a book. Let the exciting person inside of you out.

Or do nothing, change nothing, and remain as you are. That’s my opinion. It’s really very simple. Make a choice and take the action that goes with it. It is working for me, and it will work for you.

Day 16 on HCG…Check!

I’ve got less than 10 days left on the low calorie portion of the HCG diet. That makes Day 16 one of my favorites so far. Here’s a quick reminder of the program layout. It started off with 2 days of loading. Loading is eating a whole lot of food with a whole lot of fat content and therefore calories. While loading you start taking your HCG three times daily. It’s supposed to increase the ability of the body to absorb the HCG product. After loading you start a 500 calorie per day portion of the diet. I chose to do the program that had me dieting for 23 days, but there are different lengths you can choose from.

Once you complete the low calorie portion of the diet you start what they call the maintenance diet. I’m all for being prepared (or over prepared as some might call it) so I’ve been looking into the maintenance diet lately. During the maintenance diet you can eat as much food as you want. (But no more than a total of 1500 calories per day). And there are a few exceptions when it comes to the actual foods that are okay to eat while on the maintenance diet. You can’t have any sugar or dextrose or honey or molasses or high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. You can’t have any nitrites or fast food. You can’t have any trans fat. And you can’t have any starch of any kind.

That’s a pretty extensive exception, I know. But after the 500 calorie diet it sounds like heaven. I’m so used to limiting myself that the 1500 calorie per day maintenance diet is going to be a breeze; at least that’s what I’m hoping. And it helps that the restrictive diet is actually working; seeing your weight drop is fabulous incentive to keep going.

Alright so now that we’ve had that nice little recap from loading to low calorie to HCG maintenance diet we can move on. Today I weighed in at 156. I know! I did so good yesterday and no weight loss. I decided to add some green tea in (which I did…YUCK!) and try to drink a lot more water. I think I messed up with my water intake yesterday. I didn’t fill a pitcher first thing in the morning so I don’t really know how much I drank.

I took my drops (both HCG and B-Total) as required throughout the day. I don’t think the timing is that difficult. It sounded annoying at first, but 15 minutes of no food/drink before and after isn’t really that big of a deal. I go 15 minutes without food/drink all the time.

Now for the eating recap. On day 16’s lunch I had a leftover green onion burger and another half of a grapefruit (this one was better than yesterday’s). It’s weird how some of them are just really sweet and yummy and others just aren’t. I had Melba Toasts with lunch, as well. I had the last of the grilled chicken at dinner (more leftovers) and I drank a ton of water. Here’s hoping I see weight loss again tomorrow!

Start sifting through the rubble of such thoughts and ask if your beliefs are serving you or not. As we start to change our beliefs on a fundamental level, our outcome potential also changes dramatically. Visualize yourself a lean, toned, athletic, wealthy and successful individual. Believe you are on your way there now. Change your beliefs about what is possible. Modify the self talk and I promise you will change your life!

3. Record your progress- Would you believe that by writing down everything that goes into your mouth, you will lose 10 pounds this month? Do it and find out what happens. How To Lose Flabby Upper Arms Without Touching A Dumbbell

It is possible to lose flabby upper arms without having to step on a treadmill for hours on end. Is this statement really true? Absolutely.

They key is to practice the most effortless type of fat loss in existence. No, I’m not talking about surgery. I’m talking about spontaneous fat loss.

It’s so easy because there is no exercise involved and no dietary restrictions. You simply tweak little things here and there and the arm flab goes away just like that.

So here are 4 awesome tips you should consider so that your flabby upper arms begin to melt away:

1. Buy foods with labels from not-so-cool places. Studies have shown restaurant goers will unconsciously eat up to 500 fewer calories at dinner if they are presented with wine that comes from an undesirable wine-producing area. You have to be creative here, but it’s worth it.

2. Try to only eat low GI carbs. The carbs with the absolute lowest GI are vegetables and legumes. The more of these you eat, the more arm fat you’ll lose. Obese teenage boys will eat 621 fewer calories in a single meal when eating low GI carbs. Low GI carbs are your best friends.

3. Have a salad before any big meal. One really cool study showed that restaurateurs ate 100 fewer calories when given a salad with dinner. Now be really careful with how much dressing you use.

4. Substitute saturated fat with unsaturated fat. One study demonstrated that people eat 200 fewer calories per meal when consuming olive oil versus butter. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat and butter is a saturated fat. Follow the above tips and you’ll notice a reduction in flabby upper arms with minimal effort on your part.

Ok, you are one step closer to getting rid of those flabby upper arms. And if you take action on the advice I have given you, you’ll be many steps closer to getting rid of the arm flab.

Having said that, you will get much faster results if you add in some exercise. Please do not get the wrong message, exercise is still a great tool for toning your arms!
